History Of Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg stands on a historically significant site where the first warehouse of the Hamburg docks, the “Kaiserspeicher” was built in 1875 with 19,000 square meters of storage space.

Kaiserspeicher, an iconic Neo-Gothic building was a masterpiece at that time and emerged as a landmark of Hamburg, while the city became the major center of international trade. But the building was destroyed completely during the II World War.

Hamburg city took the decision to denote the badly damaged ruins in 1963. A new building Kaiserspeicher A built on the site in 1966 for storing the goods such as Tea, Cocoa, and Tobacco. This building continued to be used for storage of these goods till the 1990s, but its importance began to decline after the increasing popularity of container transport and it was no longer in use.

In 2003, Swiss architect firm Herzog & de Meuron took over the project and decided to build a new concert hall on top of the old building and the foundation stone was laid on 2 April 2007.After a succession of construction delays, and budget issues, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg finally opened for visitors in 2017, and since its opening, it has brought in over half a million visitors in just 3 years and garnered the biggest attraction in the city.
